Project unveiled! <o/
June 15th, 2009 - 01:46am

Now I know what you're thinking, so before you come out and say it... yes, James does look like Edward Norton, and yes, Will does look like Bobby Lee. They both did an incredible job of presenting at E3 this year, and I was very happy to see it didn't crash :3. Thoughts on the game? Let me know~ .

Obviously, I'm really excited to be working on a project like this. UFG is an incredible studio to work for, and when you combine their sheer awesomeness with projects like this? Well, it's hard for me to imagine a better place to be working in AAA development.

Oh, and I started learning C. I was told that it's a good place to get a foundation for software engineering, so I'm giving it a go. I've been using this book to guide me, and while it's rather short, it's extremely dense. I've learnt a lot in the first 50 pages, so I'll chip away at this for a bit.

New job! \o/
May 16th, 2009 - 08:41pm
Don't really know what to post here right now, so I'll keep it short:

After a quick 3-month unvoluntary (yet satisfying) vacation, I've just started working at United Front Games as QA. My manager at Propaganda, who was also dismissed from Propaganda in The Great Culling of 2009 managed to score his same position at UFG in early February. Some QA positions opened up in late April, and I snuck myself in. It's been awesome so far, and as soon as I can say what I'm working on, I'll overload the site with videoes, interviews, and previews for all to see. \o/

As for the indie developer thing... well, I came to a few realizations while exploring that possibility.
  • Programming: I'm a hack. I made some progress, but really? I'm terrible.
  • Web-sites: A better hobby than a living. No offense to anyone, but I'd die doing this full-time.

I feel like I learnt a lot through trying to make it work, though. The amount of articles and tutorials I sifted through really helped open my eyes to what sort of dedication and passion these people must have. I think I'll get there one day, but for now? QA FOR LIFE.

Well, at least I'll have some free time...
February 4th, 2009 - 9:35pm
So... I got laid off.

You can read all about it here and here. I am actually in a fairly good place to be laid off... relatively speaking, at least. I don't worry or feel bad at all about my situation compared to a lot of my fellow Propaganda-ites, some of which had families, mortgages, and children to take care of. I'm just a tester who lives at his parents house. /shame

As for me, I'm actually going to try my hand at being an independent developer. After spending 2 years at Propaganda being 'tree artist guy' or 'cinematic lighting guy', I felt kind of trapped and that I may have been shunning my roots. My passion for game development came, years back, from opening up RPGMaker2k and creating everything; the sounds, the art, the scripting... I'm going to chase that feeling and give Flash development a shot.

I'll post when I start making progress on anything mentionable. :P

What's going on...
November 26th, 2008 - 09:35pm
So, it's been a while and I've sort of neglected this site. No new features have been added since the last update, but that's because I've been chipping away at something new.

I bought Sins of a Solar Empire about 6 weeks ago and quickly downloaded the mod tools. Ironclad included a selection of their acutal development tools, which is an an act I really admire. I haven't gotten involved with the mod community too much yet, but I've been a part of it long enough to see that Ironclad is determined to help out wherever they can and post on their own forums to help prospective modders. Again, an act I really admire.

I've been working on a EVE-Online total modification for Sins. Nothing too crazy just yet, but I have made a number of breakthroughs and the mod is starting to take shape. It's all roughed in right now, but I'm working on it daily.

Here's the shortlist of things I have done so far:
  • EVE Assets: I've ripped the models, textures, and sounds from the classic client.
  • Added 4th Race: All 4 races will be playable and have their specific ships.
  • Modules: I've added ability modules for webs and AB/MWD so far.
  • Interface: I've changed a bunch of graphical things in the frontend; more to follow.
The end result will be a total conversion that (ideally) will be fun to play for both Sins and EVE fans alike. Ideally, I won't get sued by CCP for using their assets, either. ;D I e-mailed them before and got permission to use the IP, but I am still unsure of if this includes the assets or not...

...guess I'll find out soon. ;D I'll probably be starting a project blog once I have more to show.

Version 1.0?
October 1st, 2008 - 09:28pm
So the site has finally reached a point where I am happy to call it Version 1.0!

I only call it Version 1.0 because I plan for there to be a 2.0, and a 3.0, and a 4.0. I'm not sure where I'd draw the line, but I'm basically using my portfolio site as a way for me to relearn how to web-design. Since I started coding this 2 weeks ago, I learnt how to use CSS, XHTML, and even started dabbling in a bit of Flash and XML (which is being used in the banner up top).

I'm actually really happy with how this site has turned out. I've learnt a ton, and have a surge of motivation to press on and learn even more. I know there is a certain line at which adding to a game development portfolio would seem useless, but the whole point of me doing this isn't to update a portfolio site I no longer need; it's to take some steps forward in web development (without paying a single shiny penny to any institution, who charge their poor students for free information found on www.w3schools.com).

Here's the shortlist of things I need to accomplish for Version 2.0:
  • RSS Feeds: For the site incase I ever have 1 single fan.
  • Wordpress Support: The setup I have now is fraudblogging.
  • Comments: So people can... comment?
  • E-mail Feedback: A form for people to send me hatemail.
  • A Working Dropdown: Select a file and go. Hot.
That's it for now. The list above is very minimalist; I'm sure I'll find more things to add as I go along. If you are reading this now and know how to do any of the things I listed, give me a shout at brad.kavanagh[@]hotmail.com.
